Brave souls take leap into icy Clark Lake
By Dana DeFever, Jackson Citizens Patriot

People dressed in everything from hula skirts to Incredible Hulk costumes paraded around Saturday, February 16, 2008, at Eagle Point Marina before jumping into Clark Lake.

The jump was part of the 2008 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge, which raises money and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan.

Several said jumping into the lake's icy waters wasn't the worst part - it was getting out. Kent Fiero, 15, from Parma can attest to that. "Coldest thing you've ever imagined - it's 10 times colder," he said This was Fiero's second time jumping, and he said it was harder this time because he knew what to expect. Fiero was dressed as Steve Urkel, with suspenders and all, from the television show "Family Matters."

The event raised more than $14,400, with more than 79 plungers from ages 12 to 55.

Jackson Polar Plunge Coordinator Laura Keiser said many people returned from last year's event and more were first-time plungers. "It's just one of those crazy things to do in the middle of winter," she said.

For Linsey LaMontagne the jump started as a dare from her colleagues at Coldwater Correctional Facility and ended with her wet and wrapped in towels. "There's no words to describe it (jumping in). It's worse getting out," she said. However, it wasn't so bad that LaMontagne wouldn't do it again, she said. LaMontagne and her co-workers dressed as Hooter waitresses.

Saturday was the fifth year Marty Hall of Lake LeAnn participated. "It's a little chilly," he said. "Every year's different. This year's pretty crisp." Hall jumped in the water with his crew from the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility. A friend of Hall's from work has a daughter in the Special Olympics, he said.
